Decision to allow Welsh fostered young people to stay welcomed – but still a long way to go

Leading charities the Fostering Network Wales and Action for Children-Gweithredu dros Blant today welcomed the Welsh Assembly’s decision to extend the age that fostered young people can stay with their foster carers until 21, but are seeking assurances that local authorities will receive extra money from the Government to fund young people wishing to stay with their foster families.

Welsh Government: do the right thing for fostered young people in Wales

The Fostering Network Wales is calling on the Welsh Government to ensure that the Social Services and Well-being (Wales) Bill places a duty on local authorities to allow and support fostered young people to stay with their foster carers beyond the age of 17, ahead of a crucial vote on the Bill tomorrow (Tuesday 11 February).

Scottish Government announce raise of age of foster care

In response to the Scottish Government's announcement that young people in care who turn 16 from 1 April 2015 will be able to stay until 21, director of the Fostering Network Scotland Sara Lurie, said:

“We are pleased that the Scottish Government has recognised the importance of ensuring young people in care can stay beyond the age of 18, and is making this change to the law.

Don't Move Me campaign - We need you!

As you may know from updates on the Fostering Network website, the once in a lifetime opportunity to ensure that young people can stay with their foster carer until they are ready to leave is almost upon us.

In around three weeks the House of Lords will be considering whether to support an amendment to the Children and Families Bill which would ensure that more young people could stay with their foster carers beyond the age of 17.
