Young Advocates

The Young Advocates project, funded by the Life Changes Trust and the Young Start Fund (delivered by the National Lottery Community Fund), will see young people with care experience create learning opportunities for teachers and trainee teachers around what the day-to-day reality of school or college can be like for them. The young advocates will also train foster carers to help build their awareness of how they can best support the children and young people in their care.

Calling 16- to 25-year-olds!

  • Would you like to be a young advocate and join an exciting new project with The Fostering Network?
  • Do you have experience of care?
  • Have you been a part of a fostering family?
  • Are you passionate about change?
  • Would you like to share your experience to help inform others?

If so, we would love to hear from you!

Supported by a steering group, our Young Advocates project will be led by young people, including care experienced young people and the sons and daughters of foster carers. The project will strengthen relationships, raise awareness and reduce stigma within education.

Together you will create learning opportunities for teachers and trainee teachers around what the day-to-day experience of education can be like for children and young people who are care experienced. As part of this group you will also spend time speaking with foster carers to share with them your experience of education and help build their awareness of how they can best support the children in their care.

Funded by Life Changes Trust and Young Start Fund, this group will tap into existing networks and groups across Scotland to build upon what we already know about how to improve school for care experienced children and young people.

If you would like to find out more about joining the group, or if you know any young people who would be amazing young advocates, we would love to hear from you. Please contact Amy Adair on scotland@fostering.net or 0141 204 1400.

Augmented reality tree

These AR trees have verbatim recordings of quotes from a variety of professional describing positive changes they would like to see for care experienced young people in education in Scotland. Your phone allows you to have the tree in you room with you. When you pick the apples, you hear the different voices.

Music video - The place I call home

This music video was created to help raise awareness and reduce stigma for care experienced young people.

For the music, the Young Advocates wrote the lyrics, melody, instrumentals and some voice recordings. For the music video, they created images for the digital art, created the story of the video and attended sessions on how to create a music video digitally. All this was done remotely during lockdown. Please watch the video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eUf_EWWpbNs

Campaigns

The Young Advocate project supports the Tick the Box campaign and care experienced young people aiming high and fulfilling their potential. If this includes applying for college or university, it is important to ‘Tick the Box’ when applying. Read from the Young Advocates about how it benefited them.

The Young Advocate project support the Scottish Government’s commitment to Keep The Promise.

The Young Advocates project support Foster Care Fortnight which is held in May each year. We have helped to raise money, promote and host events for this campaign which helps to show how foster care transforms lives.
