Fostering has changed my life. My parents started fostering when I was 16. Im now 23. Retrospectively, at the start, it was hard. I was amidst my GCSEs and at first, it was a big adjustment. I'm sure our family would all agree that fostering was right for us, but perhaps the time in my GCSEs wasn't the right time to start. But I had a really good relationship with my parents and it made it easier. Saying that, my relationship with my parents has only got stronger over the past seven years.

Shannon, aged 11 from Lancashire, recently entered the Seeing Ear poetry competition with an emotive piece of writing entitled “Love Poem”. This poem was initially written as part of her school homework, however the poem was so well received by her teachers at school and admired by her family, Shannon was encouraged to submit the poem for the competition. It is now featured in an anthology published by the Seeing Ear, the online library for blind and print-disabled people. Here's the original poem.

Being the daughter of a foster carer can bring great joy, but it can also present many challenges. Madison Clarke, 17, from Badger Hill, North Yorkshire, has stepped forward to raise awareness of what a positive experience being at the heart of a fostering family can be.

There has been an awful lot written about attachment disorder and you aren’t a foster carer for very long before you attend at least some training on the subject. Some of what’s written is very academic so I thought it might be useful to simplify it.

My family – me, my mum, my dad and my three younger brothers. It had been like this for four-and-a-half years when my mum took on a job that was different and more difficult than any other job she’d had or ever will have. It involved us all, not just her – my dad, me, my brothers and our home, our family life. My brothers and I never really understood what the job would involve, Ruaridh, my youngest brother was only four and I was 10. Yet, I now don’t see it as a job, it is way more than that to all of us. It is one of the best experiences of my life and I love it.
