A Love Poem by Shannon #SandD2015
Shannon, aged 11 from Lancashire, recently entered the Seeing Ear poetry competition with an emotive piece of writing entitled “Love Poem”. This poem was initially written as part of her school homework, however the poem was so well received by her teachers at school and admired by her family, Shannon was encouraged to submit the poem for the competition. It is now featured in an anthology published by the Seeing Ear, the online library for blind and print-disabled people. Here's the original poem.
Love Poem
Love is rose red
Love feeles like warmness
Love tastes like yummy chocolate
Love looks like hearts
Love sounds like wedding bells
Love feels like cotton balls
I am in love
Elinor Davies, her eldest foster sister (and biggest fan!), caught up with Shannon during the summer holidays, to find out what inspired her to write the poem and to have a girly chat about love.
Elinor: So tell me, why did you write this poem?
Shannon: Well it was just a bit of homework I had to do. The theme was love so I wrote it about the way love makes me feel. We were learning about similes in school, so I used a few of those to describe love.
Elinor: I’m guessing homework is usually quite dull and a bit of chore, did you enjoy writing this poem?
Shannon: I don’t really like writing things down, because I can’t always see the lines and I normally use my iPad to type stuff, but this time was ok because my poem wasn’t very long!
Elinor: Who or what inspired you? Have you ever been in love?
Shannon: I’m not going to tell you who inspired me and I’m not telling you who I love, no way!
Elinor: So it wasn’t based on our family?
Shannon: No!
Elinor: Ok, so you’re a bit shy about whom you love (I think I have an inkling but won’t name him, don’t worry!) I know you love animals and have many pets that live in the garden; do you think you’ll write another poem about them?
Shannon: Yes probably, I’ve already started a poem about the goats! But I prefer playing with them than writing about them!
Elinor: What did you think when your Love Poem was published in the book?
Shannon: I was really embarrassed and quite surprised! I still can’t believe Mum told me to send it in.
Elinor: You should be very proud. Thanks for your time Shan!
